Deb Flynn - Watercolour, DigitalArtist Statement
My creative life started on an Etch‐A‐Sketch(which I wore out) and on mountains of paper, through plenty of ink in ballpoint pens and graduated to mechanical pencils, ink nibs, markers and paint brushes. A passionate doodler and a sketcher of everything, especially Zentangles. My favourite colour is black. I like to outline everything in black and go from there….could be pencil crayon, could be markers or watercolour/gouache. My favourite subjects are anything mechanical, architectural, or complicated. And I like dramatic skies. I find that my eyesight is diminishing a bit from macular degeneration and the black outlines help me find my way. I draw/paint or sketch in a photorealistic style inspired by my favourite artist Norman Rockwell. He was an idol to me and I spent a lot of time in his hometown of Stockbridge, Massachusetts drooling over his large works of art and studying his style. In my many years of graphic design, I became accustomed to creating on a computer. Now that I am retired from that often hectic and deadline oriented insanity, I settled for my iPad where I can create digital works of art in that same realistic style. I like to create watercolour paintings with some salt throwing, sponge dabbing & water droplet splashing and dramatic skies/clouds being thrown in for good measure. I’ve come to enjoy on‐site (urban) sketching and other sketches in watercolour, pencil crayon or marker, or sometimes all three. |
